ASCL: 46th Annual Comparative Literature Conference, April 13-14

The annual Comparative Literature conference is being held on April 13 and 14. The topic is "The Comic Spirit in the Modern Age" and there are panel sessions and some larger talks. There is even a Classics panel on Roman Satire.

The conference is in the Anatol Center in the AS building. You can download a conference program here.

The history of the evolution of comic forms is variegated and complex. Yet, it is a history that continues to inform the various manifestations and applications of humor within contemporary social discourses. Whether it is delivered in the form of stand-up, on the screen, or in the genre of theater, prose or poetry, the conventions by which modern-day comedic practice is established are the result of the refinement, renegotiation and reconfiguration of traditions harking back to Classical, Renaissance, and even early 20th-century sensibilities.

LBPOST: Event Honoring Former CSULB President's Life Set for April 30

A public Celebration of Life remembering the late Steve Horn, former president of Cal State Long Beach and U.S. congressman, is being planned for Saturday, April 30, at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

Horn passed away at his home in Long Beach on Feb. 17 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 79. Click here to read the Long Beach Post's previous coverage of Horn's death.

The university's third president, Horn lead the campus for 18 years, during which time the university grew in stature and distinction. His tenure from 1970 to 1988 proved to be a time of growth for the university, both in terms of academic programs and services, as well as physical facilities on the campus.

Horn strengthened existing academic programs, reformed the general education requirements and initiated several innovative programs at CSULB, including an honors program; the student internship program; student learning assistance; Senior University, which is now known as Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; and the Disabled Student Resources Center.

The physical aesthetic of the university also took shape under his direction. Several campus facilities were erected while he was at CSULB''s helm. Among them are the Social Services and Public Administration building, Brotman Hall, the Engineering and Computer Sciences complex, Ithe Music complex, International House, Parkside Residence Halls and the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.

The B-Word Project: ‘Defiant Gardens’ in Wartime

Banned, Blacklisted and Boycotted: Censorship and the Response to It (The B-Word Project) is the first campus-wide initiative at CSULB, led by the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, to focus attention on one broad topic through innovative collaborations with professors, departments, organizations, and off-campus entities. It will stimulate wide-ranging discussions and activities that examine what happens when a voice—whether in artistic endeavors, journalism, scientific research or other areas—is stifled through governmental, commercial, or social restraints.

The B-Word Project activities include significant participation by the performing artists known as the NEA 4 (Tim Miller, Holly Hughes, John Fleck, and Karen Finley); a talk by former NEA chair Bill Ivey; many new course offerings; a reconstructed dance piece by Bill T. Jones performed by CSULB students; creation of new digital music by students under the guidance of Negativland and Girl Talk; a major visual art exhibit on the Peace Press; a substantial look at newly-restored censored murals by David Alfaro Siqueiros; a film series on the effects of the Hollywood Blacklist and FCC Decency/Obscenity Rules; a visiting artist series focusing on visual artists with informal meetings and lectures; a residency by Sweet Honey in the Rock with performances and workshops on the music of American slaves; a project on Japanese internment camps of WWII and the inmates’ creation of gardens as a response; among other events.

The CLASsiC Blog will cover all future events as part of the B-List Series. The first event held as part of the B-Word Project will be held on February 25 by the CSULB Japanese Garden.
