Run for student government and be a COLA Senator!

Interested in making a difference in your life and the lives of thousands of CSULB students? Want to make an impact in the College of Liberal Arts by representing the Liberal Arts student body in the AS Senate? Then run for ASI Student Government! Filing for elections has already begun. The deadline to file is Friday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. For information on positions, procedures and important dates, click here.

Every year, the College of Liberal Arts student body elects two students to serve as the senators for the AS Senate. All CLA majors are encouraged to apply. Our senators have gone on to great positions, including ASI President, CLASC President, ASI Treasurer, and CSSA President.

You can get an application from the AS Government Office in USU 311, starting February 7 through February 18. Because the form must be completed on triplicate paper and signed, the application is not available online. Online elections are from March 21-24, 2011.

POSITION TITLE:
Associated Student Senator for the College of Liberal Arts

POSITION OVERVIEW
Serve as a representative of the students within the College of Liberal Arts

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Represent the members of the College of Liberal Arts.
2. Attend weekly meetings of the Associated Students Senate; serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Students, Incorporated; and fulfill the legal and ethical obligations attending both positions.
3. Participate in initiating amendments to the Articles of Incorporation and A.S. Bylaws, Chapter I.
4. Participate in approving amendments to the A.S. Bylaws, Chapter II.
5. Fill vacancies in the A.S. Senate.
6. Hold membership on at least one A.S. Senate Subcommittee, A.S. Subsidiary Board, or A.S. Commission.
7. Serve on university committees and boards at the direction of the Vice President.
8. Compose and present resolutions to the Senate for consideration.
9. Attend College of Liberal Arts Student Council meetings and give reports on A.S. activities.
10. Ensure that all activities, policies, and resolutions are initiated and carried out in the best interests of the student body as a whole.
11. Attend ASI Leadership Retreats held in August and January.

REQUIRED MEETINGS
• A.S. Senate - meets Wednesdays at 3:30 PM
• College of Liberal Arts Student Council (General Meeting) - meets 2nd & 4th Tuesdays at 5:00 PM
• College of Liberal Arts Student Council (Executive Meeting) - meets 1st Tuesdays at 5:00 PM
• Various meetings as selected (click here to see the full list)
• Other meetings as designated by the Bylaws, the President, or the Vice President

TIME COMMITMENT
Must maintain a minimum of 3 office hours per week. All office hours must be recorded with the Assistant Director for Student Leadership and Involvement.

COMPENSATION
• Scholarship of $330.00 for each semester (Fall & Spring)
• Use of office space, computing resources, and office phones
• Special Brotman Hall parking pass in conjunction with student pass

COURSE CREDIT AVAILABLE
Students wishing to receive credit for service in ASI have two options:
1. Register at the Career Development Center for the Self-Placed Internship program, or
2. Enroll in an internship or Independent Studies class through the student’s academic department. Most majors offer an Internship or Independent Studies course

HELPFUL SKILLS & ABILITIES
Time management, public speaking, ability to learn parliamentary procedure to participate in meetings, ability to interact positively and network with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus administrators; ability to interact comfortably with members of a constituency to obtain opinions, determine interests, and assess needs on an ongoing basis; familiarity with the duties and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors.
